Soundpainting is the live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present the language comprises over 800 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. Soundpainting is live composition.
Soundpainting is an incredible tool to examine and work with parametres of musical interplay in a repertoire, the participants create themselves on the spot. The Soundpainting gestures and the basic principles are intuitive and easy to understand and within minutes everyone – across traditional borders of genre and musical preference – is taking part in “musical interaction in its original form”.
In the course we will learn some of the basic signs of the Soundpainting language and will be creating music in and outside of genres, play anything from rock, reggae and techno to abstract improvisations. As Soundpainters we will play the ensemble as an instrument, where you give the musical input and we structure it into spontaneous compositions and a homogeneous sound. We will experiment with well-known music, take it new places and create a symbiosis between known and unknown, safety and gambling, structure and chaos.
Soundpainting es el lenguaje de composición/dirección creado por el compositor neoyorquino Walter Thompson. El lenguaje está dirigido a músicos, bailarines, actores, poetas, y a los artistas visuales trabajando en el medio de la improvisación estructurada. A la fecha de hoy, éste lenguaje incluye 800 gestos, que son articulados por el compositor/ director indicando el tipo de improvisación deseada de parte de los ejecutantes. Se consigue la dirección que debe tomar la composición por medio de los parámetros de cada grupo de gestos señalados. El origen del Soundpainting lo podemos encontrar en la idea inicial de dirigir y darle forma a la improvisación a la vez que se ejecuta la misma. En estos veinte años de evolución Soundpainting se ha convertido en un sistema completo por medio del cual se pueden realizar espontáneamente música, teatro, danza y bandas sonoras.
Los gestos del Sounpainting y sus principios básicos son fáciles e intuitivos, y en el taller aprenderemos algunos de estos signos básicos para crear música de diversos géneros, desde el rock, reggae y tecno a improvisaciones abstractas, experimentando con música familiar, explorando nuevos terrenos y creando una simbiosis entre lo conocido y lo desconocido, la seguridad y el azar, la estructura y el caos.
